This International Women’s Day, meet Chloe. She’s a valued member of our team and one of a growing number of women forging her career in engineering.

Chloe says if you’re up for a challenge, a career in engineering is very rewarding. And we celebrate that.

What made you decide to go into engineering?

I started my career in car maintenance and  enjoyed the technical aspect but found the work repetitive.  I like to have a challenge and something that keeps me interested.  During my apprenticeship, I discovered a passion for working in spline grinding.  I joined PTI as I could see that the team were highly skilled and were invested in developing new employees which encouraged me to take the leap.  The spline grinding team at PTI have helped me to grow my skills and confidence in my ability helping me to achieve my full potential.  Spline grinding appeals because it offers a great variety – no two days are the same and I’m always learning.

What have you learned so far?

Absolutely loads!  In the last two years I have learnt so much.  I have learnt both technical and non-technical skills which have meant that I can work confidently on a larger range of components.  The variety of work ensures we are constantly learning.  As an engineer, problem solving and adaptability are key skills which I have continued to develop.

What do you enjoy working on the most/most proud of?

I’m really proud of how far I have come as I never imagined at the start of my career that I had the ability to progress as far as I have.  I’m proud of the skills I have gained and look forward to continuing my professional development.

Is there an amazing project that you’d like to be a part of?

Every job we do is part of a project – for example, a component of a racing car or an aeroplane – that makes my job really interesting – to know that we are part of a bigger picture.

What skills would you like to develop next?

Due to the variety of work at PTI, opportunities to learn and develop arise every day.  Being open to new opportunities is important and I’m always open to learning new things.  At PTI you are given the opportunity to broaden your skills and have the support of your team which is really important to me.

Do you have any tips for other women thinking about a career in engineering?

It’s very tough – it won’t be easy as Engineering is still stereotyped in our society.  However, it is moving forward and if you are up for a challenge it is very rewarding.  The accomplishment and satisfaction you get from knowing you’ve worked hard and earned your money is a real sense of achievement and a feeling of independence. I’m working my way up to a well paid job so I can financially support the future I want for myself.  I’d advise any woman thinking of a career in engineering to go for it – it’s the best thing I ever did and I couldn’t be happier!
