Joby S4 Flies Further And Faster Than Any Other eVTOL

Expanding on its S4 electric air taxi prototypes, California-based Jobs Aviation has announced that it has registered what it believes is the fastest eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-off and Landing) test flight in history, after reaching a true airspeed of 205 mph.

According to Robb Report, the recorded speed beats the aviation firm’s promise of achieving 200 mph eVTOLs, and it is yet unclear if further testing can find even more speed.

In July 2021, Joby announced that it had also beaten its target of a projected 150-mile range figure, after a 156.4-mile test flight, which the company also claims to be a record for the vehicle’s class.

Joby claims that its S4 aircraft has now flown farther and faster than any eVTOL vehicle ever built, and experts are at a loss to suggest any competitor aviation firms who are even aiming for similar speeds and distance figures.

It has been suggested that it could take a hydrogen-powered eVTOL to supersede the range record set by the S4, but at the time of writing, no hydrogen eVTOLs are being tested.

However, it is important to note that the Joby S4’s test figures would likely have been for unmanned flight, controlled remotely. With four passengers and a pilot, the figures could be significantly different, and the sector is keen to see how fast and far the S4 can go with its maximum gross take-off weight of 2,177 kg.

But in any circumstances, Joby has achieved a significant benchmark, and a testament to their development of the S4 is at the forefront of eVTOLs.
